The Head’s reflections on the week

Posted: 20th June 2025

It was wonderful to see so many of you at Glebe Villas last Friday for Prep School Sports Day including speeches from our Heads of School and a celebration of the successes of the year that is (nearly) behind us. I am always delighted to welcome people to Glebe for the first time; it really is Hove’s Secret Garden and a well kept secret that I would like less well kept. Please tell people about our amazing site that our children get to enjoy! Our guest of honour, Mr Philip Mitchell, sponsor of the Leonardo Competition, is an Old Boy, and shared his memories of the site from over half a century ago. Glebe Villas also hosted our first ever Reception Graduation ceremony yesterday, with our youngest pupils showing what they have achieved in their first year, and that they are ready for the transition to “Big School” in September. Our oldest children have also been making use of Glebe Villas this week as the base for their rehearsals for High School Musical. This is of course on top of the field being used for Games lessons across the school in the glorious sunshine we have enjoyed recently.

The lovely weather also made a perfect setting for our al fresco Piano Recitals on Monday evening in the Back Court. Over fifty performers took part from Reception to Year 8, with some of Pre-Prep making their debut as solo performers. These are the first steps on the St Christopher’s Performing Arts journey, which culminates at The Barn Theatre next week for our Upper School.

Our Year 8 continue to enjoy lots of fun activities alongside play rehearsals, with a visit to Palace Pier on Tuesday and a sailing trip on Wednesday. As their time with us comes to an end, there is much anticipation in school about next week’s Assembly, when the new Heads of School, Prefects, Sports Captains, House Captains, and Ambassadors will be announced. It is always lovely to see children cheering in approval when the names are called out. I have been impressed with all the Year 7s who wrote formal letters of application for positions next year, but remind the entire year group that I expect ALL of our Year 8 pupils to be role models to the younger ones and ambassadors for the school.

Four and half days of the year remain and we have much left to look forward to!

Ms Elizabeth Lyle, Head
