The Head’s reflections on the week

Posted: 21st November 2025

Drama at St Christopher’s takes you from Reception’s Nativity to centre stage at Brighton College! At the moment, Reception are preparing to perform for the first time with their Nativity play, Year 1 have a Christmas Elf play up their sleeve, and Year 4 will present Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol next Friday. Upper School have started rehearsing next summer’s production of Shrek The Musical, which will be performed at the Cairns Theatre at Brighton College. Last week saw Year 5’s turn in the spotlight, as they took to the stage of The Old Market to perform their abridged version of Macbeth. With spooky lighting and makeup, it was an impressive production in a professional theatre. Every year group puts on a Drama production across the course of the school year, and I am always impressed with the children’s ability to learn lines and get into character. For many, it is on stage that is their time to shine.

This week sees the 700th edition of the St Christopher’s Newsletter. Much has changed in the past twenty two years, but a lot hasn’t. The Head’s weekly message is still the first thing you read; visiting speakers address Assembly on a variety of topics; trips and visits enhance our learning; fundraising activities take place for charities in our local community; the Parents’ Association are active in support of the school; Nelson (now Nelson Dragons) seem to win rather often; and sadly the Head still has to remind parents that double parking is both dangerous and illegal.

In the words of our School Hymn, “From smallest acorns grow great trees”, and our Newsletter is certainly an example of this. As we approach our centenary in 2027, I am proud of the way St Christopher’s communicates with our parent body via the Newsletter, Instagram, the Yearbook, The Seeker, Facebook, the Parent Portal, the website, and most recently, Vimeo. A huge amount happens in the classrooms, on the sports pitches, in Assemblies, on trips and visits, on the stage, and in the playground each day; and I hope you value the insight that our communications give you into the life of our school.
