The fiercely contested House Relay at Sports Day

Athletics takes place in the summer term for all pupils. A highlight of the year are the Sports' Days in which Houses compete in a range of events at Glebe Villas. Events include sprinting, hurdles, 500m, high jump, long jump, throwing the cricket ball, shot putt and relays.

This is very much a family day with picnic lunches followed by the annual Prize-giving. All pupils attend Sports' Day and Pre-Prep pupils also have their own dedicated Sports' Day with fun sporting events.

Every Form enjoys a 40 minute PE lesson in addition to two Games periods per week. The Physical Education programme at St Christopher's has been designed with the aim to give every pupil at the school the opportunity to learn and discover as many sports as possible.

Girls’ Hockey at St Christopher's continues going from strength to strength. We play Hockey in the Michaelmas Term and have our practice sessions at Blatchington Mill Astroturf and Southwick Leisure Centre.

We also have House Hockey where the girls play against each other in order to gain points towards the House Trophy. The enthusiasm for this sport is evident in the number of girls participating in Hockey clubs outside of school, and we've had players selected for the County Hockey team too.

St Christopher's plays Cricket in the summer term and uses the impressive facilities at Preston Nomads Cricket Club for coaching and home matches as well as the indoor facilities at Sussex County Cricket ground. The school is strong at cricket and many pupils have been selected to represent the county.

Girls' Cricket is an increasingly popular sport in Sussex and we start in Year 3 with formal coaching sessions. We play our matches at our home ground and at Henfield Cricket Club which we also use for some games sessions too. A growing number of our girls play at county level and this year our 1sts will play some hard ball matches.

Netball is a very popular sport at St Christopher's. It's the longest running girls' sport, having started in 1999 with the introduction of girls to the school. As our numbers grew, so did our teams. We have enjoyed a number of successful seasons which include an undefeated 1st team in 2012/13, 2015/16 season and 2019/20 season, the U11A team in 2013/14, 2017/18 and 2019/20 season, winning the Lancing College Netball Tournament  2 years in a row and an U9A team who have only lost 1 match! Our U9 and U8s were very successful last year so there is a lot potential moving up the school. Our House Netball matches take place in the Lent term where the girls enjoy a competitive afternoon playing for their House.

The U13A team participated in the 2016 IAPS tournament at Roedean and finished as National Champions! Our U11A team also qualified for the IAPS National Finals in 2018 and won the Brighton College Pelican Netball Tournament 2018 in undefeated matches.

More recently, our 1sts won the U13 Lancing College Tournament in 2020 and were undefeated that year. Our U11s also proved themselves as strong contenders winning the majority of their matches and two tournaments and one runners up position that year too. Both teams would have had a very good chance of doing very well at IAPS if they had been allowed to compete but sadly Covid made it not safe to do so.

This year, we hope to emulate the success of previous years and we are planning to take part in the IAPS competition and other tournaments. It's great to be allowed to compete against other schools again. We've missed it!

The St Christopher's girls tend to leave Year 8 loving Netball and lots of them play for outside clubs and go on to do very well. We have had a number of girls in the county team who went on to gain sports scholarships to their senior schools.

Football is extremely popular at St Christopher's and is part of the weekly sports' programme for Year 3 and above in Michaelmas Term. The fixture list is very full with school matches on Wednesday afternoons and tournaments at all levels throughout the season. We have enjoyed great success with undefeated teams and tournament victories at all levels in recent years, including finishing in the top four in the country in the national U13 IAPS Football Tournament 2017 and the U11 got through to the National Finals in 2019.

We have more girls playing alongside the boys in matches each year and we go to a number of girls' football tournaments throughout the year. We hold our annual U11 Girls Football Tournament in the Lent Term and which we have won on a number of occassions.

We work closely with Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, Shoot and other local clubs. There are after-school football clubs for pupils in the Pre Prep to help them to develop their skills.
