The Head’s reflections on the week

Posted: 28th February 2025

As a Head, one of my favourite things to do is celebrate success! Following last week’s announcement of academic and artistic achievements by our senior pupils, I am delighted that this week gives me the chance to announce sporting glory! The U13 Netball team set off at the crack of dawn on Tuesday morning, heading for the IAPS Tournament hosted by a school near Portsmouth. I was delighted to presented with the trophy by the team in Celebration Assembly this morning.

This was truly a bumper week for Sport at St Christopher’s. Fixtures and tournaments took place on four days this week. Twenty five teams took part from Years 3 to 8, with many children representing their school more than once. We fielded teams for Netball, Football for both boys and girls, Hockey, and Cross Country. As well as developing physical fitness and mental wellbeing, sport fosters teamwork and resilience, which are vital skills in the classroom as well as on the pitch. Celebrate your team’s successes, be gracious in defeat, and on to the next victory!

We move on to the Performing Arts. I am looking forward to Senior Drama Club’s production of Stuff this evening. They are excited as a professional director will be watching a recording of their performance and giving feedback. I hope to see many Upper School parents – and indeed grandparents – in the Hall later on. Following last week’s LAMDA performance, it’s a busy time of year, with Year 6 presenting a variety evening that includes their own films next Tuesday, and Year 2’s production of Sleeping Beauty on the last full day of term. Middle and Upper School are also getting excited about their visit to see Matilda in London on the Wednesday of the final week of term.

In news from the visual arts, we are getting ready to launch the publicity for our Artists Open House event on Saturday 10th May. Mrs Watson chose a painting by Ruby in Year 6 to be our logo for this year, and you will be able to see it in both the online listings and the brochure that will be available shortly all across our city. Please add the date to you diary, as artwork by everyone in our school will be on display, from Reception to the portfolios of our Year 8 Art Scholars. We have our Open Morning the day before, do please encourage friends and colleagues to attend both events if they would like to find out more about life at St Christopher’s.

Finally, best wishes to all those in our community who observe the start of Ramadan this evening.
