The Head’s reflections on the week

Posted: 6th February 2026

One of the joys of working with children is their natural creativity, and desire to express themselves and their ideas. This week saw all our entries for the Junior version of Brighton College’s Leonardo Creative Competition finally sent off to the Judges. I was lucky enough to have a preview before they went, and I am delighted by the standard and number of our entries this year, on the theme of “Beyond Tomorrow”.

There are some wonderful examples of art, from paintings, to collage, to 3D pieces, to photography, and digital art. We have some superb creative writing, with some fine examples of poetry, many featuring accompanying illustrations. Musical entries have seen a surge this year, with some self-composed songs being particularly impressive. We have short films, an ecology inspired board game, a piece of dressmaking, and a dance routine! Our Newsletter will feature a different entry every week for the remainder of this term, ahead of the Prize Giving at BCPH in the first week of the Summer Term.

It has been a bumper week for sport as well! An impressive 21 teams took part in matches or tournaments this week. In the past seven days, children have represented our school in netball, hockey, rugby, football, and cross country. We have seen our first girls’ football fixture of the season, and a mixed netball tournament, but sadly the weather conspired against our annual Night Lights Rugby matches against BCPS. Our team of the moment are our 1st Netball squad, who won the plate at the IAPS tournament last week, with Captain Leilah named Player of the Tournament by the other schools’ coaches.
